NITI Aayog has proposed a roadmap to expand India’s bioeconomy to $691 billion by 2035, supported by six national missions spanning healthcare, agriculture, industrial biotechnology, disease surveillance, marine resources and next-generation biopharmaceuticals.
The plan recommends a ₹50,000 crore Bioeconomy Growth Fund, PLI-style manufacturing incentives, faster intellectual-property approvals and new institutions for data, investment and coordination. It aims to close the gap between laboratory research and commercial products while building globally competitive biotechnology companies.
For the economy, the strategy could create high-skilled employment, strengthen domestic innovation and reduce dependence on imported technologies and medical products. Its projected scale, including more than three crore jobs, will require disciplined funding, regulatory capacity and stronger links among research institutions, industry and markets.
