DPIIT Organizes Key Stakeholders Meeting on MIP for the Furniture Industry

Today, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Government of India, organized a crucial meeting at Vanijya Bhawan, New Delhi, bringing together key stakeholders from the furniture industry, including Laghu Udyog Bharati (LUB), AFMT, Godrej, IKEA, Steelcase, and other industry representatives. The meeting focused on discussions regarding Minimum Import Price (MIP) proposals for the furniture industry and challenges related to Quality Control Orders (QCOs) covering essential inputs for domestic manufacturing.

Key Discussion Points:

 Protection of Domestic Manufacturers:

Laghu Udyog Bharati (LUB) and AFMT emphasized the need for higher duty rates on imported furniture products to safeguard domestic manufacturers, particularly MSMEs and smaller players in the industry.

They highlighted the diversity within the industry, arguing that any policy changes should ensure fair opportunities for all segments, from small-scale artisans to large manufacturers.

 Industry Perspectives on QCO Implementation:

Concerns were raised regarding the impact of Quality Control Orders (QCOs) on raw materials and components used in the furniture industry.

Several participants emphasized the need for a practical and phased approach to QCO implementation to avoid disruptions in supply chains and manufacturing processes.

Diverse Views from Major Industry Players:

Large furniture brands, including Godrej, IKEA, and Steelcase, presented varied opinions on the issue, reflecting the complexity and differing interests within the sector.

Some stakeholders highlighted the need for striking a balance between promoting domestic production and ensuring market competitiveness.

LUB’s Commitment to a Balanced Approach:

Laghu Udyog Bharati (LUB) is actively working on a comprehensive report that presents a balanced view addressing both industry protection and market growth.

The report aims to offer recommendations that benefit local industries while keeping in mind the broader interests of the furniture sector.

Conclusion:

The meeting marked a significant step toward shaping industry policies that support domestic furniture manufacturers while addressing the evolving market dynamics. LUB’s proactive role in advocating for local industry interests will play a crucial part in the final recommendations to the government.

The next steps will involve further discussions and policy deliberations, ensuring that India’s furniture industry remains competitive, self-reliant, and aligned with global standards.
